How did 30,000 Haitians get to Texas? - by Vodou Economics - Vodou Economics
The joke in the immigration community, however, is that TPS is never temporary. There are Somalians who have been under TPS since 1991. It’s rare for the government to revoke this status. As unexpected as the Spanish Inquisition, the Trump administration looked at ending TPS, stressing the “temporary”. With Trump’s loss, TPS did not end. In fact, it was expanded. In May, Biden, probably remembering the earthquake during his tenure as Vice President, extended TPS and expanded it to include all Haitians who had come before May 21, 2021. All of those Haitians who came to the U.S. thinking they could get TPS actually got it! This puts those migrants who went to Chile in a funny position. They avoided the U.S. because they knew policy for Haitians had become unwelcoming. Yet that choice in retrospect was terrible because they lost an opportunity to get TPS. So what are they thinking today? Obviously, it’s time to finally get to the U.S. And that’s how we get 30,000 Haitians sleeping under a bridge in Texas.

I never thought ideas were about signalling allegiance Archive link
“I lost a couple of people that I had been very good to on an interpersonal level because of the Harper’s letter — people who unfollowed me and blocked me with no explanation. They actually know me. That’s crazy,” says Williams, clearly upset by this. “The details of what’s right or wrong don’t matter, it’s that ‘you’re not with us’. I never thought ideas or writing were about signalling allegiance.”

Why people who don’t trust vaccines are embracing unproven drugs
This phenomenon has its origins in America’s political polarization. One of the best predictors of whether someone is resistant to getting the Covid-19 vaccine is whether they identify as a Republican, and we know those partisan bonds are powerful.
within the American right, the concepts of loyalty and betrayal are more influential to their worldview than on the American left. Staying true to your group is a powerful pull for conservatives. “For these folks, facts mean nothing; membership and identity, everything,” Bernstein said over email. “Groupishness, in-/out-group differentiation ... is much stronger on the right.”

Sloppy Data Analysis in NYT's Partisan Tale about Covid and the Unvaccinated
if it failed to account for any of these factors, how did The New York Times ultimately account for the higher death rate in Trump/rural counties? It does so entirely by invoking the ideological makeup of their knuckle-dragging residents and their apparent self-destructive desire to “own the left.”

The Plague of the Poor - Tablet Magazine
Given that the COVID-19 vaccines do not appear to stop the spread of the virus, there is simply no medical or moral justification for vaccine mandates and passports. Those comfortable with these policies should ask themselves how they would feel if a fourth jab is soon required to buy groceries, take a domestic flight, rent an apartment, access a bank account, be admitted to an ER, or receive unemployment benefits after being fired for noncompliance. The emerging bio-authoritarianism that began as “two weeks to flatten the curve” will metastasize into something even more repellent and dangerous unless it is forthrightly opposed now, through boycotts, protests, lawsuits, labor action, and civil disobedience.

Due Process, Normal Social Relations –Being Destroyed by Covid Snitching Culture
students are hindered from publicly criticizing policies that to outsiders increasingly appear beyond ridiculous. To review just a sampling: At Stanford and University of Pennsylvania, vaccinated students are required to wear face masks while playing pickup basketball. At Georgetown and the University of Southern California, students are expressly forbidden from removing their masks in class even for a few seconds to “hydrate.” At Columbia and Brown, decrees have been issued barring students from hosting guests or going to restaurants. And just this past Monday, Harvard Business School canceled in-person classes, citing an allegedly “distressing” spate of “cases” amongst a population of students who — as is uniformly true at these institutions — are already near-universally vaccinated.

Declassified State Dept Report Says Microwaves Didn’t Cause “Havana Syndrome”
the sounds accompanying at least eight of the original 21 Havana syndrome incidents were “most likely” caused by insects. That same scientific review also judged it “highly unlikely” that microwaves or ultrasound beams — now widely proposed by US government officials to explain the injuries — were involved in the incidents. And though the report didn’t definitively conclude what caused the injuries themselves, it found that “psychogenic” mass psychology effects may have played a role.
