(PDF, Dec 2020) RF Magnetoelectric Antenna for Neural Activity Monitoring
This article describes the development of a radio frequency (RF) platform for electromagnetically modulated signals that makes use of a software-defined radio (SDR) to receive information from a novel magnetoelectric (ME) antenna capable of sensing low-frequency magnetic fields with ultra-low magnitudes. The platform is employed as part of research and development to utilize miniaturized ME antennas and integrated circuits for neural recording with wireless implantable devices.

What the Hell Is ‘Right-Clicker Mentality’?
“This is a great example of right-clicker mentality,” Midwit Milhouse said on Twitter. “Sure, you can make your own gold-coated steak for 65GBP, but then you don’t have the satisfaction, flex, clout that comes from having eaten at Salt Bae’s restaurant. The value is not in the cost of the steak. Go ahead, make yourself a gold-coated steak at home. Post a picture of it on Instagram. See how much clout it gets you. Salt Bae’s dish costs around 1500GBP because people want to pay 1500 GBP to show off that they can afford to pay that much. It’s all about the flex.”

Study shows how Covid-19 immunity wanes over time
The results were clear: the rate of confirmed COVID-19 infection revealed a slow but steady waning of immunity over time. Among individuals 60 years or older who were fully vaccinated last January, the number of confirmed breakthrough infections was 3.3 per 1,000 people during the three weeks of the study. Those who were vaccinated in February and March had lower infection rates of 2.2 per 1,000 and 1.7 per 1,000, respectively. The data revealed a similar pattern in those aged 40 to 59 and those aged 16 to 39.

Vaccine Mandate resisted within NIH, sparking debate Archive link
Christine Grady, head of the NIH’s Clinical Center bioethics department, signed off on the Dec. 1 seminar, a session called “Grand Rounds.” She said via email that she believes there is interest in the topic across the agency. “Our hope is that the December Grand Rounds will be relevant to the debates that are going on around the country regarding vaccine mandates,” an agency spokeswoman said on her behalf. Dr. Grady is married to Dr. Fauci, who has advocated strict mandates to propel vaccination drives. Dr. Wendler, who reports to Dr. Grady, said the bioethics department doesn’t set out to influence government policy. “We’re a consultation service and sort of an academic department,” he said. “We’re not policy people.”

(Jan 2021) How Can We Know What’s a Conspiracy Theory and What’s Not? - Rabbit Hole
Truth is not always found at the top of Google search results, or in the New York Times, or in what the “experts” say. Truth is a process of constantly asking questions and refining hypotheses, and consensus, well, that’s a mutual agreement to stop.

comment:
We're in this bizarre zeitgeist where everyone is telling you to listen to science because it's all true, but for the love of god, don't engage in any sort of scientific inquiry yourself, who knows what heterodoxy you might arrive at.
The coffee machine at work has a bunch of advertisement stuck on it, how the coffee has been fine-tuned by experts and tested by scientists to be the optimal coffee experience. Like what the heck, am I not a better judge of whether I like the coffee than a bunch of scientists?

“Critical Race Theory” and actual education policy, part two
Cranky old white people need to get out of their own bubble of conservatism and acknowledge that only half (and falling) of American kids are non-Hispanic whites, so what seemed relevant to most kids one or two generations ago may not be today. And it’s genuinely important for schools to teach kids about stuff that they are interested in. You could imagine a world in which we try to program social studies curricula exclusively with factually accurate and politically uncontroversial information about Paraguay, but it would be extremely uncompelling for most kids. But of course to students in Paraguay, the history of Paraguay feels vital and interesting.
