(Feb 2022) On Bounded Distrust - by Zvi Mowshowitz
Whereas in 2022, after everything that has happened with the pandemic and also otherwise, I strongly believe that the trust and epistemic commons that existed previously have been burned down. The price of breaking the old rules is lower, but it is more than that. The price of being viewed as actually following the old rules is higher than the cost of not following them, in addition to the local benefits of breaking the old rules. Thus the old rules mostly are not followed. The new rules are different. They still bear some similarities to the old rules. One of the new rules is to pretend (to pretend?) to be following the old rules, which helps. The new rules are much less about tracking physical truth and much more about tracking narrative truth.

Biden Admin Tells Embassies They Can Lower Flag To Mourn Gaza Hospital Blast: Report
All diplomatic and consular posts across the globe received a memo from Secretary of State Antony Blinken that they can move the flag to half-staff "to observe national periods of mourning following an official proclamation by the host government with respect to the loss of innocent lives at the Al Ahli hospital blast on October 18,"

They can’t believe how many people seemed to think hostage taking, baby killing, sexual assault, and burning people alive was on any level “complicated.” They wonder what part of “they set fire to peace activists” is tough to denounce. They feel like the world, on some level, thinks they deserved it. They remember the initial reaction, before bodies starting arriving at the morgues in Gaza, before Israel even dropped a bomb. They saw the celebrations, the calls for Intifadas, and the crowds chanting “Gas the jews.” So they wonder about the current outcry. Even if Israel behaved perfectly, would it ever be enough?
“What if they try an attack like that here?” You can’t get that many dudes in America who are willing to die. That’s the nice thing about capitalism. As soon as you taste Arby’s, shop at Costco, and go to a strip club, you’re like, "I’m still mad but I’m not, like, martyrdom mad.”

US currently assesses that Israel is 'not responsible' for Gaza hospital blast

As you can see, the hospital itself was not even hit or damaged (aside from some broken windows). Rather, the rocket fell short into the parking lot, burning some cars. There is no impact crater consistent with a high-explosive bomb from the IAF. Instead, essentially all of the damage appears to have been from a fire caused by the unspent rocket fuel. Further, the idea that 500 people were killed appears to be completely false. At most, it may have been a few dozen people, and that's assuming the parking even had a large number of people in it.
This was a targeted disinformation campaign that ran its way around the globe, parroted by the largest news outlets, causing violence in multiple countries. That violence is still ongoing, with Western embassies and consulates under attack in Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan, among others. It was all based on a lie told by a terrorist organization. This wasn't a small fudging of the situation either. Hamas completely made up a story about a hospital being leveled by an IAF bombing. The press reported it uncritically for hours, with some claiming people were being "pulled from the rubble." They then made up a story about 500 people being dead. The press also repeated those numbers with zero verification
