At least 10 killed after vehicle hits crowd of people in New Orleans
A man in a white pickup truck, who was "hellbent" on killing as many people as possible, drove around barricades and plowed his vehicle through a crowd of New Year's Eve revellers on Bourbon Street in New Orleans early on Wednesday, leaving at least 10 dead and injuring dozens of others, city and federal officials said. The suspect was killed by police in shootout, ABC News Aaron Katersky reports. In addition to going at a fast pace, the suspect was allegedly firing a gun as he mowed people down, law enforcement officials said. He was shot and killed by police when he got out of his vehicle with an assault rifle, the officials said.
The 8th District is currently working a mass casualty incident involving a vehicle that drove into a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon Street at approximately 3:15 AM.
Alethea Duncan, an assistant special agent in charge of the FBI’s New Orleans field office, said officials were investigating the discovery of at least one suspected improvised explosive device at the scene.
The incident came toward the end of New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans and hours before the kickoff of the Allstate Sugar Bowl, a college football quarterfinal held in the city's Caesars Superdome, with thousands expected to be in attendance.

New Orleans attack suspect named, accused of killing at least 10, injuring dozens
The suspect accused of plowing a truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning has been identified by a law enforcement source as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. Police fatally shot him after the attack, which killed 10 people and injured 35. The source said Jabbar was carrying an ISIS flag in the truck, and authorities have said he was dressed in military gear.
The suspect in the New Orleans massacre, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, may not have acted alone. Fox reported that a source within the New Orleans Police Department said that the suspect was carrying a "a glock pistol and a .308 rifle that had been reportedly stole in New Jersey. The .308 rifle had been equipped with an optics indoor suppressor. "There are at least 4 or 5 other suspects involved," reported Fox.

1 Dead After a Cybertruck Explodes Outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas - The New York Times
One person was killed and at least seven people were injured after a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning, the authorities said. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department received a report of an explosion at about 8:40 a.m. local time at the Trump Hotel. They were told that a 2024 Cybertruck “pulled up to the last entrance doors of the hotel,” Sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference. Elon Musk, Tesla’s chief executive, said in a statement on X that “the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck” and said the vehicle was functioning properly.
It was not immediately clear what was the cause of the explosion, but the authorities mentioned the attack in New Orleans during the news conference.

What Happens When a Whole Generation Never Grows Up? (Archive)
Amid steep declines in homeownership, marriage and birth rates, economists have long been warning that young people are struggling to meet the milestones of adulthood. Although some 30-somethings are consciously choosing a less traditional path, many say these goals are simply out of reach. A third of today’s young adults will never marry, projects conservative think tank the Institute for Family Studies, compared to less than a fifth of those born in previous decades. The share of childless adults under 50 who say they are unlikely to ever have kids, meanwhile, rose 10 percentage points between 2018 and 2023, from 37% to 47%, according to Pew Research Center. “You can kick the can down the road, but only so far,” says Reeves.
In many ways, this age group is in a better place financially, on average, than their parents were at this age. The problem is that they don’t seem to know it. Only 21% of adults in their 30s rated the overall economy as good or excellent last year, per the Federal Reserve, and economists say young adults are significantly more pessimistic about the future than prior generations were.

Use an Android smartphone as a "serial modem" with DOS
So there you have it! It is possible, with a bit of patience, to use a modern smartphone as a serial modem and connect DOS to the internet over WiFi/mobile, even without root! Naturally, this being serial, the connection is very slow, but I guess that adds to the nostalgia factor. In fact, maybe a bit of tweaking to the Termux scripts could be used to make the phone play a recording of the traditional dial-up sound to complete the experience!

U.S. sanctions Russian and Iranian entities over attempted election interference
“The Governments of Iran and Russia have targeted our election processes and institutions and sought to divide the American people through targeted disinformation campaigns,” said Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Bradley T. Smith. “The United States will remain vigilant against adversaries who would undermine our democracy.”
As a result of today’s action, all property and interests in property of the designated persons described above that are in the United States or in the possession or control of U.S. persons are blocked and must be reported to OFAC. In addition, any entities that are owned, directly or indirectly, individually or in the aggregate, 50 percent or more by one or more blocked persons are also blocked. Unless authorized by a general or specific license issued by OFAC, or exempt, OFAC’s regulations generally prohibit all transactions by U.S. persons or within (or transiting) the United States that involve any property or interests in property of designated or otherwise blocked persons.

Documents Reveal How George Soros Controls Prosecutors
The Media Research Center obtained nearly 8,000 pages of internal documents through public records laws that show how a Soros-funded group called Fair and Just Prosecution (FJP) “directed Soros prosecutors to manipulate the rule of law concerning illegal immigration, drugs, abortion, election integrity, capital punishment and laws against childhood sex changes.” MRC’s yearlong investigation suggests that Soros maintained influence over his chosen candidates after their elections were over. FJP had the Soros-backed attorneys sign 33 pledges to not enforce certain laws — including election integrity measures and immigration laws — and attend more than 50 meetings or “convenings,” some of which were “mandatory.” FJP pressed prosecutors to let criminals off the hook if they are black, having them pledge to “reduc[e] racial disparities in case outcomes by at least 20%.”

The Libs are Noticing Biden’s Broadband Scandal
"So what has the Administration been doing over the last 1,039 days instead of connecting Americans? It has been layering on red tape and advancing a wish list of progressive policy goals," Carr continued. "The $42 billion program led by Vice President Harris is being used to pursue a climate change agenda, DEI requirements, price controls, preferences for government-run networks, and rules that will lead to wasteful overbuilding. All of this will leave rural and other unconnected communities behind."

Biden’s unfinished business - POLITICO
A wide-ranging examination of the Biden administration’s spending and tax policies reveals signs that his efforts could leave a lasting mark, but also ways in which his agenda has yet to take hold — after unleashing money for batteries, solar cells, computer chips and clean water; luring foreign-owned factories to U.S. soil; and turning some red-state Republicans into supporters of green energy projects.
A $42 billion expansion of broadband internet service has yet to connect a single household. Bureaucratic haggling, equipment shortages and logistical challenges mean a $7.5 billion effort to install electric vehicle chargers from coast to coast has so far yielded just 47 stations in 15 states.
In all, Congress provided $1.1 trillion for Biden’s big climate, clean energy and infrastructure programs. More than half of that spending — at least $561 billion — has yet to be obligated or is not yet available for agencies to spend, according to a POLITICO analysis of federal data.
- Considering how effective the first half billion was; perhaps its a good thing we haven't spent the rest yet?

$25K bond for Isle of Wight man in FBI's 'largest' homemade explosives seizure | VPM
A federal judge set a $25,000 bond for an Isle of Wight County man facing a federal weapons charge in connection with a Dec. 18 FBI raid at his Foursquare Road home that the case prosecutor called the largest seizure of homemade explosives in FBI history. According to a criminal complaint and supporting documents, Spafford is charged with possessing a short barrel rifle, which federal law defines as less than 16 inches long and illegal unless registered with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. During the nearly two-hour bond hearing in Norfolk, a federal prosecutor painted Spafford as an anti-government extremist who, according to an affidavit accompanying the criminal complaint against him, was stockpiling weapons and homemade ammunition, including the short barrel rifle, for “something that Spafford would not be able to do alone.”
Spafford allegedly told a confidential informant, whom Cardwell testified Spafford had known to be a local police officer and neighbor, that he owns an unregistered 10-inch barrel rifle and makes approximately 50 rounds of ammunition per day. Spafford allegedly told the informant he’d moved many 100-lbs. boxes of ammunition to the Foursquare Road residence “but he does not have 10,000 rounds yet,” according to the affidavit. Cardwell testified that Spafford, in conversations with the informant, allegedly expressed a desire to “bring back political assassination” and had been using a photograph of President Joe Biden for target practice at a shooting range where he was pursuing a 300- to 400-yard sniper qualification.
- The only charge is "possessing a short barrel rifle" ... Owning explosives is usually good for a "weapons of mass destruction" charge at least.
