AstroForge aims to succeed where other asteroid mining companies have failed | Ars Technica
the company plans to build and launch what Gialich characterized as a "small" spacecraft to a near-Earth asteroid to extract regolith, refine that material, and send it back toward Earth on a ballistic trajectory. It will then fly into Earth's atmosphere with a small heat shield and land beneath a parachute. The goal is to build each of these satellites at a recurring cost of significantly less than $10 million.

Scott Alexander's correction on ivermectin, and its meaning for the rationalist project.
The erroneous meta-analysis is simply one step in a long walk of errors that got us here. These kinds of errors happen to all of us. But the reason Scott stopped at the result he got, I suspect, is that this is the result he was expecting, based on what he was hearing. It was a result that confirmed his biases. I’ve made the same error in recent memory, and I’m not sure how it can be avoided.

Sabine Hossenfelder: Backreaction: Trans women in sports: Is this fair?
Athletes are biological extremes. “Fairness” has never been the point of these competitions. They’re really more like freak shows. Kind of like physics conferences.
genetic engineering has become reality. And as long as athletes can make a lot of money from having a genetic advantage, someone’s going to breed children who’ll bring in that money. This is why I suspect a century from now professional athletics will not exist anymore. It creates too many incentives for unethical behavior.

Solving the Housing Crisis will Require Fighting Monopolies in Construction
there will be no progress ending these great disparities until the residential construction industry adopts technology that other industries began adopting more than 100 years ago – factory production methods. There have been attempts to introduce these methods in residential construction for the last century, but they are always blocked and sabotaged by monopolies in the traditional construction sector, that is, the sector producing homes outside, on-site, using “stick-built” methods. Monopolies in traditional construction sabotage many types of factory-built homes. In this essay, we focus on the sabotage of particular types of such homes, what we call small-modular homes. These homes can be produced and sold at very-low prices, so that the sabotage of these homes has disproportionately hurt the low-income. The sabotage is the primary reason for the existence of, and perpetuation of, U.S. housing crises.
