  • Please Let the Internet Die

Online spaces are captured by oligarchs and saturated with slop—and they’re exacerbating humanity’s worst impulses. It’s time to start over.

  • The young are conformists in denial

In France, the (peaceful) protesters demand better-funded schools and then a smoother link to universities, which in turn will determine their career prospects. You might regard this as an expensive request for an indebted state. But it is also an embrace of bourgeois values. What the students want is a proper functioning of the merit-based, study-and-work social order, not an alternative to it. A fairer rat race but a rat race. The contrast with the 1990s slacker ethic, let alone 1968, with its frontal attack on normie ways, is sharp. And lost on some of these purported rebels. Or consider the “cockroach” movement in India. It got going after an exam leak ruined the matriculation of lots of medical students.

  • Nice Little Satellite You Got Here. Shame If Anything Were to Happen to It.

in addition to undermining Ukraine’s defensive capabilities (where the 130 to 160 km/h speed cap cut Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces validated target output by 23.0%), Musk/SpaceX compromised, or at least threatened to compromise, Ukraine’s offensive capability. Specifically, its capability to attack refineries and other targets within Russia.

Trump’s, Rubio’s, and Hegseth’s claims that the administration had nothing to do with throttling Starlink may or may not be true. Trump’s asking Musk pretty please to turn it back on could be genuine, or it could be Kabuki. Again, neither alternative is good. If the President of the United States is reduced to a supplicant, and Musk has the unilateral authority (shielded by commercial Terms of Service) to make decisions with such vital national security implications, and perhaps to do so in cooperation with American enemies, we are in a very bad place. Especially given how embedded SpaceX currently is within the Pentagon as we head toward Round Two with Iran.

    • Note the assumption that of course Musk must support Ukraine's war in any way possible... I wonder how quick these people would be to suggest the same access should be granted to Israel's efforts? Plain partisan pressure propaganda. Note also the tacit admission that far from "destroying astronomy" Starlink is providing an unprecedented sensor system for orbital objects.

  • ‘I lost everything’: Ex-MIT scientist David Sabatini goes on camera for first time since $6M verdict

A Boston jury has awarded former MIT biology professor Dr. David Sabatini $6 million after finding that a former colleague, Dr. Kristin Knouse, defamed him. The verdict came years after her sexual misconduct allegations cost the renowned scientist his lab, his job, and his reputation. The jury’s verdict was announced on Oct. 16 after a three-week trial. Sabatini had sued Knouse for defamation and that she wrongly interfered with his job and his future career opportunities, according to court documents. Knouse filed a counterclaim accusing Sabatini of sexual harassment, creating a sexualized hostile environment and retaliation. The jury rejected her counterclaims.

In a video deposition, attorney Arrowood questioned Knouse about other messages. Knouse confirmed that she had written, “I know what I want, and I go after it.” Asked about a message in which she wrote about visiting Sabatini’s hotel room late at night during a work retreat, “In hindsight, it was quite aggressive, #hetoo,” Knouse said she “was just making a joke about how I was being forward in that moment.” Knouse also admitted in the deposition that she selected which text messages to provide to investigators and that she coordinated with people at MIT who raised concerns about Sabatini. She acknowledged that she did not give at least one exchange to investigators from the law firm Hinckley Allen. “I was trying to make my own judgments about what was relevant,” she said. Documents from the case show Knouse called her campaign against Sabatini “Covert Operation Dethrone.” In one message, she joked about buying a “Lambo” if she won a settlement.
